        | | The area is of
particular interest to geologists, with some of the oldest rock formations on earth. The
area was studied and mapped by the eminent geologists Peach and Horne some 86 years ago,
they even stayed at this hotel. |

        | Traces of early
man, wolves and bears have been found in the local caves (there are 48 caves between
Inchnadamph and Knockan - however most are "wet" caves). |

        | A trip to the
famous Smoo Cave at Durness is well worth a visit (a huge limestone cavern with three
        compartments). | | |
